The idyllic, tropical beaches and crystal clear warm waters of Phuket have made this South Thailand island one of the most visited destinations in South East Asia. Originally a backpacker's haven, Thailand's largest island now attracts all kinds of travelers staying in everything from cheap homesteads to gorgeous Phuket boutique hotels.

Phuket is located off the west coast of Thailand in the temperate Andaman Sea and is surrounded by many other smaller islands. Linked to the mainland by a causeway over the Chong Pak Phra at the island's northern point, Phuket is easy to get to and from. Hilly areas are mainly covered in green, lush jungle while the lowlands are predominantly made up of rice paddy fields, rubber, coconut and pineapple plantations and rainforest which is protected as the Khao Phra Thaeo Park.

While the east coast comprises of many limestone shoals and a few fine beaches, the west coast has a large number of stunning sandy beaches separated by headlands and rocky coves. The island's surrounding waters are teeming with exotic marine life and the breathtaking coral gardens lying amongst the turquoise waters are a diver's paradise. Sadly, due to excessive human activities and environmental pressures the marine life isn't what it used to be and is steadily declining.

The quieter beaches tend to be located to the northwest of the island, while the largest concentration of shops, hotels and restaurants is found around Patong and extends down the coast towards the tourist resorts of Karon and Kata. No matter what you are looking for in a tropical beach holiday you are bound to find it on the heavenly island of Phuket.

Phuket boutique hotels are plentiful and offer an upmarket option for discerning travelers. Expect rooms to be en-suite with a mini-bar, satellite TV and telephone, plus room service facilities. With outdoor swimming pools and often a choice of dining options within the hotel itself on offer, you can rest assured that every desire will be taken care of on your Phuket vacation.

Phuket is well known for its many festivals and events and overlapping your trip with one of these wonderful celebrations will really make your holiday a memorable one. With important events dotted throughout the year, be sure to check out what's on and when. Remember to book one of the Phuket boutique hotels well in advance if planning your stay to coincide with a popular island event. Late September hosts the hugely popular and spectacular Vegetarian Festival. April, beginning on the 13th, sees the Thai New Year (Songkran) in with a massive water fight, while November hosts Loi Krathong, a beautifully magical festival with hundreds of glowing paper lanterns.

With so many beach resorts catering for the traveler's every need you will be spoilt for choice when deciding where to stay. Phuket boutique hotels are found in most beach resort areas and offer a superb standard of luxury and comfort. Whether you are traveling alone, with a friend or partner, with a group of friends or with your family you will find the perfect hotel for your needs and wishes.

The range of activities to do on Phuket is endless and includes sea canoeing, elephant trekking, white water rafting, surfing, snorkeling, waterskiing and wakeboarding, jungle trekking, game fishing, boat charters, shopping, spas, bowling, Phuket Zoo, island tours, golf, Thai cooking classes, parks and waterfalls, temples and shrines, go-karting, bungee jumping, horse riding and sailing.

If you still have plenty of energy at the end of the day and wish to experience this tropical island's nightlife, you won't be disappointed by the diverse range of entertainment on offer. Most tourist areas have plenty of bars to enjoy a drink at, while the larger resorts of Patong and Karon have a lively bustling atmosphere. Patong is the place to be if you are looking for energetic nightclubs and discos and a wide variety of bars. Phuket boutique hotels are plentiful in Patong, allowing you to enjoy the vibrant Thai nightlife till the early hours with only a short walk back to your hotel. Phuket City is less hectic than Patong and you can enjoy partying with the locals here while taking a break from the tourist scene.
